The Cape Hatteras Secondary School (CHSS) boys varsity soccer team is hosting the first round of the state playoffs for the 2022 NCHSAA Soccer Championships, and the island community is invited to come out to Buxton and cheer for the Canes in this milestone game.

“After the season we had during COVID, which was modified, and then the next year having no team, winning the conference and hosting the first round of the state playoff game is a huge accomplishment,” said Coach Ian O’Neal. “The team has worked extremely hard to get to the level they are at now. In comparison to the beginning of the season, they are light years better.”

“The last time we made it to the [playoffs] was the last year we had a team, but the last time we won a state playoff game was 2014,” he added.

To sweeten the deal, there will be free candy at the gate for all the kids in costumes, and also a huge raffle opportunity for fans, thanks to generous donations from a number of local businesses, including Duck Donuts, Blue Marlin Business Solutions, Burger Burger, Happy Belly Ice Cream, Conners Supermarket, Lalo’s Tacos/ Giovanni’s, Endless Summer Surfing and Lisa’s Pizzeria.

The game starts at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31, at the Buxton Back Road Field. The concession stand will also be open, offering pizza and drinks supporting the Spanish classes, and T-shirts from the alumni game will be available as well.

“This is our comeback season,” said parent and CHSS teacher Evan Ferguson. “Come out and support your hurricanes as they look to make a push into the playoffs!”
