Contractor needed for Avon’s summertime Operation Clean Beach Program
The Avon Property Owners Association (APOA) is seeking a private contractor to perform its Operation Clean Beach Program for the 2022 season, which is a program that has been going strong for more than 15 years.
Via the program, the APOA stations 75 trash cans along the beach in the village of Avon, as both a service for visitors, and as a way to keep the shoreline clean during the peak season.
“This program is a convenience to visitors,” said Rick Anzolut, APOA Coordinator. “It makes it easy to discard the [items] you’re not bringing back to the cottage. Our membership likes it a lot, too, because if they are taking a beach walk, and they find trash to be discarded, they don’t have to carry it around.”
The contractor collects trash and discarded beach gear from the 75 trash cans 2-3 times per week, and hauls it from the beach to a dumpster conveniently located on N.C. Highway 12 in Avon. Trash collection occurs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and sometimes cans are removed from the beach before high tide events, like major storms.
The contractor can consist of an individual or a small team, although a 4WD truck will be required in order to complete the regular trash pick-ups. The contractor will also need to provide all labor needed to collect and transport the trash to the dumpster. Payment is made to the contractor every other week, and a detailed invoice is required, so the contractor will need to count and report on each collection.
Though APOA membership dues go towards funding the program, a large percentage of the seasonal initiative – 40% – is paid for by additional donations.
“When we send our membership forms out, in addition to dues, there’s an option to offer separate donations for the [4th of July fireworks display] and the beach trash program, and the membership is exceedingly generous with these donations,” said Anzolut.
And in recent years, the volume of trash collected on the beaches has increased, demonstrating both the need and the popularity of the program.
“We have found that in 2020 and 2021, we were hitting new high volume totals for the program,” said Anzolut. “When we see the kind of volume, and we see the donations, we know we have something that the majority of people want to continue.”
