54 students from Dare County’s five elementary schools gathered at First Flight Elementary School to compete in the district’s first 24 Game Math Tournament. Students began learning and playing the math card game, 24 Game, in their classrooms this winter to strengthen their computational fluency, number sense, and critical thinking. Given 15 seconds, students combine four given numbers to create 24 using order of operations.

School representative teams were selected from overall classroom winners. After two rounds of play, the top 16 players were selected as semifinalists to play in the third round. The four table winners moved on to the final round.

This year’s four finalists were Makayla Akers, a fifth grader from Cape Hatteras Elementary School, Marin McEwan and Presley Midgett, fourth graders from Cape Hatteras Elementary School, and Aaron Zheng, a fourth grader from Kitty Hawk Elementary School.

Makayla Akers won the final round and is the 2023 Dare County Schools’ 24 Game champion.
