The Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s Hatteras Island Division has announced that the gymnasium located inside the Fessenden Center (46830 N.C. Highway 12 in Buxton) has reopened as of Thursday, May 22, 2025.

The Fessenden Center’s online calendar has been updated to include scheduled gym activities for May 2025.

The Fessenden Center gymnasium was previously closed from Monday, March 3, to Wednesday, May 21, while the facility’s roof and siding were replaced and new interior lighting was installed. This project was part of Dare County’s ongoing efforts to renovate and improve outdated Parks and Recreation Department facilities throughout the county in order to better serve members of the community.

On the exterior of the facility, reassembly of the railing and deck work are still underway, with an expected completion date of Thursday, June 5, 2025. Until further notice, access to the rear dock is not available.
