First Section of Old Bonner Bridge Removed
The first section of the old Bonner Bridge was removed this past week, per a video that was taken and shared by PCL’s Jamison Padgett which shows a portion of the southern decking of the Bonner Bridge being lifted away from the structure.
The demolition phase of the project is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete.
The majority of the existing Bonner Bridge will be demolished and the material will be used at offshore reef sites in coordination with the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries. About 1,000 feet of the existing bridge at the south end will remain in place and will be open for pedestrians and to serve as a fishing pier. The rail will be updated to be more pedestrian-friendly and safer, and this section of the structure will retain the Bonner Bridge name.
