Governor Josh Stein announced on Friday he has appointed Judge Eula Reid to serve as a Superior Court Judge for N.C. Judicial District 1.
Reid, who most recently was an Emergency Superior Court Judge, will fill the seat previously held by Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jerry Tillett.
Tillett retired from the bench on May 1 after a 32-year career.
“Judge Reid has a strong career in public service within the First Judicial District,” Gov. Stein said in a statement. “Her judicial experience and commitment to her community makes her the right person for the job, and I look forward to her service on the bench.”
In 2021, Reid was appointed by former Gov. Roy Cooper as a Superior Court Judge after a 14 year career as a District Court Judge for Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties.
She was defeated in the 2022 election by then-District Attorney Andrew Womble, who has been named the new Senior Resident Superior Court Judge.
Reid has since served as Emergency Superior Court Judge, after being assigned by the Chief Justice of the state Supreme Court to fill in for regular Superior Court Judges who are unavailable due to death, disability, medical leave, or other circumstances. They have the same power and authority as regular Superior Court Judges.
Reid earned her Bachelor of Arts from Elizabeth City State University and her Juris Doctorate from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
