The work of a Hatteras ferry employee has become a model for a regional program designed to keep local students working in their home communities after graduation.
Matt Nuckles graduated from Hatteras Secondary School in 2014, but actually started working for the N.C. Ferry Division in 2013 as a summer temporary worker. Upon graduation, Nuckles began full-time employment on the Hatteras-Ocracoke route, working his way up to his current rank of Ferry Oiler.
Last week, Nuckles was recognized by the Albemarle Commission’s Northeast Workforce Development Board’s “Work Local” Initiative, which is designed to make area high school students aware of career opportunities within the region.
“This is an extraordinary way to highlight the connection between the Ferry System and the communities it serves,” said Ferry Division Director Harold Thomas.
As one of the people recognized in the “Work Local” initiative, Nuckles is being featured on posters that will be displayed around Dare County schools to encourage students to seek sustainable careers close to home.
