Per a press release from the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, visitors should use caution when participating in recreational activities on the beach and in the ocean between the villages of Rodanthe and Salvo due to debris from a house that collapsed into the ocean on the morning of Wednesday, February 9.

The bulk of the debris is at the site of the collapsed house, located at 24183 Ocean Drive in Rodanthe, however, smaller amounts of debris have been spotted as far south as off-road vehicle (ORV) ramp 23, more than seven miles away, and just north of Salvo.

The National Park Service is communicating with Dare County to coordinate the removal of the house and all related debris on the beach.

    • Those houses have been like that for some time. I have a photo from September 2020 and it looks about the same with incoming water going well under that specific house and others. It had been abandoned sometime before that as far as I could tell.
