IRS gives all North Carolinians more time to file 2024 taxes, but state returns are still due May 1

Another automatic extension has been granted by the Internal Revenue Service for everyone in North Carolina to file their 2024 federal individual tax returns.

However, state returns for last year are still going to be due at the start of next month as of now.

It had been previously announced that as a result of the devastation of Hurricane Irene last September, individuals and businesses statewide would be given until May 1 of this year to file Form 1040 and other select forms.

The North Carolina Department of Revenue followed suit, and granted the additional 16 days as well.

“Due to the lingering effects of Hurricane Helene, the Internal Revenue Service today further postponed until Sept. 25, 2025, a wide range of tax deadlines for taxpayers throughout North Carolina,” the IRS announced Thursday.

They also extended the deadline to pay any taxes that were originally due between Sept. 25, 2024, and Sept. 25, 2025.

The new deadline applies to:

  • Individual income tax returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2025.
  • 2024 contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts for eligible taxpayers.
  • 2024 quarterly estimated tax payments normally due on Jan. 15, 2025, and 2025 estimated tax payments normally due on April 15, June 16 and Sept. 15, 2025.
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns normally due on Oct. 31, 2024, and Jan. 31, April 30 and July 31, 2025.
  • Calendar-year corporation and fiduciary returns and payments normally due on April 15, 2025.
  • Calendar-year tax-exempt organization returns normally due on May 15, 2025.
  • 990, 1040, 1041 and 1120 filers with a valid extension for tax year 2023. Please note, the payments on these returns are not eligible because they were due last spring before the hurricane.

Those who need additional time beyond September 25 for tax year 2024 can get it, but they must request the extra time. This type of filing extension is not an extension of time to pay.

And the IRS noted those requests cannot be filed electronically, and can be submitted on paper using Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.

Though this extension will give a taxpayer until Oct. 15, 2025, to file, the IRS emphasized that tax payments are still due by Sept. 25, 2025.

There has been no change to the North Carolina state tax filing deadline extension of May 1, which was also granted last fall.

If you file and pay by then, no late action penalties will be applied. But interest has begun to accrue on any amount not sent by April 16.

Those who live in the 39 western North Carolina counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina that are subject to the disaster declaration related to Hurricane Helene damage won’t need to pay interest on any money owed until May 2, 2025.

If there are any changes to the deadlines from the North Carolina Department of Revenue, they will likely not be announced until next week.

Friday is an official state holiday in North Carolina, and state government offices are closed for Good Friday.
