N.C. 12 Traffic Will Move Onto New Rodanthe Roundabout on Nov. 19
Traffic on N.C. Highway 12 through the Outer Banks village of Rodanthe will be moved onto a new roundabout on Friday, Nov. 19. The roundabout is part of the eventual traffic shift onto the new Rodanthe ‘Jug Handle’ Bridge, expected to open in early 2022.
The speed limit through the roundabout will be 20 m.p.h., and signage will keep traffic flowing in a constant direction and prevent motorists from exiting the roundabout to the bridge. Rumble strips will be installed on the roadway leading up to the roundabout to remind motorists to slow down as they approach.
The Rodanthe ‘Jug Handle’ bridge, which is currently under construction and nearing completion, is a long-term transportation solution for N.C. 12 that bypasses a section of the highway vulnerable to flooding and ocean overwash. The N.C. Department of Transportation is raising the highway onto a 2.4-mile bridge that extends over Pamlico Sound between the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and the village of Rodanthe.

I get the reason for the bridge. But when I was last down there I was stunned by just how ugly it is. And IDK who/what owns that soundfront house that the bridge *nearly* mowed down. But I feel very badly for them. There’s a lot of room there to the south to have not run it that close. And I feel very badly for all who own soundfront property on the north end of Rodanthe. Did the bridge really need to be that ugly? And did it need to be there? Maybe it was time to just let the inlet be and go to ferry service. Silly thing to try to make permanent what is a sandbar in the middle of the ocean.
