As of Monday night at 7:00 p.m., N.C. Highway 12 from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe remained closed as sections of the road were covered with sand and water due to dune breaches and ocean overwash, per an update from the N.C. Department of Transportation.
Conditions remain poor on N.C. Highway 12 and ocean overwash is continuing to inundate the road with water. N.C. Department of Transportation crews worked hard on Monday to assess impacts and clear portions of the road without ocean overwash whenever possible. No damage to the roadway on Hatteras Island has been discovered.
Officials are not sure when it will be safe to reopen N.C. Highway 12, but the last winds from this weekend’s strong storm are forecast to exit the coast later today.
NCDOT will continue to provide updates on N.C. 12 as new information is available.
