The Slash Creek Bridge project is expected to be fully complete by June 18, barring any weather-related delays.
The new Slash Creek Bridge in Hatteras Village opened to traffic on May 22, but periodic single-lane closures have been required since the bridge’s opening as final touch-up work is performed.
On June 9 through June 11, the contractor will require temporary single-lane closures to complete the remaining concrete sidewalks, driveways, and shoulder reconstruction.
Additionally, N.C. Highway 12 will be closed completely on June 10 from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to complete the grooving (or texturing) on the new bridge surface. All traffic will be directed to the Eagle Pass Road detour during this closure, and N.C. Highway 12 will be reopened once this operation and cleanup are complete.
The permanent pavement markings are scheduled to be placed on Wednesday, June 18, and the road will officially and fully open to traffic soon after.

The project was originally included in the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) in 2013, and the $4.5 million endeavor was partially funded for preliminary engineering in 2015.
Hatteras Islanders got their first look at the proposed design for the new bridge at a public meeting in November 2022. The new bridge includes two 15-foot lanes, as well as five-foot sidewalks on each side.
The contract, awarded to Smith-Rowe LLC of Mount Airy, N.C., called for construction to start no sooner than Sept. 9, 2024, and end no later than May 22, 2025. Motorists wishing to avoid the upcoming lane closures may still use Eagle Pass Road as an alternative route.
