The North Carolina Turnpike Authority will be installing a special set of counters along a stretch of U.S. 158 in Kitty Hawk on Wednesday as part of data collection for the proposed Mid-Currituck Bridge Project.
Panel antennas will be installed on the overhead sign assembly near the Duck Woods Drive intersection.
They will be used to count the number of vehicles traveling to the Outer Banks that carry toll payment transponders, such as E-ZPass, NC Quick Pass, PalmetoPass, Peach Pass, SunPass, and others.
“This information will be used for the NCTA’s traffic and usage forecast models, which will help in planning and managing transportation needs,” according to a news release.
The installation is scheduled to begin on or around Wednesday, May 21 at 9 a.m.
To facilitate the safe installation, the contractor will need to temporarily close one lane of U.S. 158 at a time, NCTA said. Work will proceed lane by lane, ensuring that at least one lane remains open to traffic at all times.
A traffic monitoring device will be installed in each lane. The work is expected to be complete by Thursday morning but is subject to change and weather dependent.
Motorists traveling on U.S. 158 near Duck Woods Drive during the installation are advised to be aware of the lane closures, exercise caution and expect potential minor delays.
