Last week, Dr. John D. Farrelly announced his intention to retire from the Dare County Schools effective June 30, 2023.
In the intervening week, Dr. Farrelly and the Dare County Board of Education reached a joint determination that it would be in the best interests of Dr. Farrelly and the Board to conclude his time with the Dare County Schools on a mutually agreeable basis.
As a result, Dr. Farrelly will be taking annual leave for the month of June 2022, and will be resigning effective June 30, 2022, as part of an agreed-upon settlement based on his current contract.
Associate Superintendent Sandy Kinzel will become Acting Superintendent for the month of June, or until an Interim Superintendent is selected.
“It’s been my honor and privilege to have led the Dare County Schools since 2017,” said Dr. Farrelly. “I am extremely proud to have led us through some incredibly difficult times that included destructive hurricanes, the global pandemic, remote learning, and the many challenges we have faced in public education over the past 5 years. We have amazing teachers, leaders, and staff in loving and caring schools. I have poured all of my energy into doing the right things for children each and every day, with high standards, resiliency and transparency. I want to thank the Board of Education for the opportunity to lead one of the premiere school districts in the state and I support their desire to move more rapidly in finding the next superintendent for Dare County Schools. As a result, I have decided to work with the board to conclude my work here on June 30, 2022 and look forward to spending more time with my family.”
The Board extended its appreciation to Dr. Farrelly in a press release, thanking the Superintendent “for his dedication, his energy, and tireless work in leading our schools, implementing innovative programs and earning recognition for high levels of performance, with sound fiscal management and accountability. Dare County Schools have improved tremendously under his leadership and the Board is grateful for all that has been accomplished over the last five years.”
