Work on high voltage lines from Whalebone Junction to Oregon Inlet begins in March
A project will begin next month on Dominion Energy’s 115,000 volt transmission lines that run through Nags Head from near Whalebone Junction to Oregon Inlet.
From early March to late May, crews will be replacing insulators on the tall poles from the substation at milepost 15 to the Oregon Inlet Distribution Point adjacent to the Fishing Center and Campground.
That is where the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative cable connects with the Dominion transmission line to carry power to Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.
The project is not expected to cause any interruption to power, and no new right-of-way is needed from properties adjacent to the lines.
The work will take place seven days a week from 8 a.m. to sunset, and require temporary lane closures along U.S. 158 when work is taking place on the poles that run next to South Croatan Highway.
When the work is taking place to the lines that run west of the South Nags Head neighborhoods and through Cape Hatteras National Seashore, tracked vehicles rather than construction mats will be used to minimize the impact to the environment and neighboring properties.
