In the wake of the 2025 Dare County revaluation that saw overall property value rise by 67%, the owners of less than 4% of the taxable parcels filed an informal appeal by the May 2 deadline.
According to County Assessor Hosea Wilson, 1,523 informal appeals were filed by the deadline, representing 3.66% of the 41,567 taxable parcels. That is fewer than the number of appeals filed after the 2020 revaluation, when informal appeals were filed for 2,041 parcels, or 4.9% of the total of 41,363 parcels.
Wilson explained that county appraisers are now reviewing the 2025 appeals and will render decisions “based on the weight of evidence.” About half the appellants have already received those decisions with the remainder expected to be sent out this week.
After that, according to Wilson, if the taxpayers do not agree with the changes in the property value, or if the value remains unchanged, they may further their appeal to the Board of Equalization and Review which convened on May 5.
As explained on the county website Dare County Revaluation Timeline , appellants are notified of formal appeal hearing dates with the Board of Equalization and Review. If unresolved, property owners have 30 days from the Board of Equalization and Review’s decision to file an appeal with the North Carolina Property Tax Commission. The deadline to appeal to the Board of Equalization & Review is June 6 at 5:00 p.m.
