Buxton Volunteer Fire Department celebrates 50 year …WITH SLIDE SHOW
Howling winds, cold rain, and a chance of snow did not dampen the spirits of the many firemen of Buxton who were celebrating 50 years of service during their annual meeting on Saturday night, Feb. 16.
President Scott Busbey opened the meeting with the introductions of the active firemen and the passing out of roses to the female guests.
A tasty dinner was then served by Steve Whitley and staff. Roast beef, shrimp, chicken, veggies, and salad were followed by banana pudding and pineapple coconut cake.
After dinner, Busbey noted it was a slow year for the BVFD. Forty-three calls were made, while the average is between 60 and 70. Since 1964, he said, 1,253 calls have been made.
He also recognized the 20-year retired members who were present, including Calvin Burrus, Johnny Conner, and Mike Scott. During the 50 years of the department, there have been only three fire chiefs — Calvin Burrus, Johnny Conner, and active chief Bryan Perry.
Busbey reflected on when he joined the department in 1978 and thanked the many firemen who helped him.
Chief Perry then spoke of plans for a new station and future firetruck purchase Land was recently purchased across the street from the existing fire department.
The Chief Award went to Matt Munden, and the Fireman of the Year Award went to Courtney Whitehead.
At the end of the celebratory evening, the firemen and guests enjoyed a slideshow.
