Thursday’s storm update: More ferries are added
Beginning Friday, Nov. 2 at 6 a.m., all re-entry restrictions for Hatteras Island will be lifted and ferry service will be available for everyone, including visitors. The only access to Hatteras Island is by ferry until further notice.
The only priority given for emergency ferry service is for essential commodities and materials, as determined by Dare County Emergency Management and the Ferry Division. County Emergency Management has also said that priority will be given for medical emergencies and appointments for such treatments for chemotherapy, but not for doctor’s appointments.

Emergency Ferry Service – Stumpy Point to Rodanthe
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is adding three runs to the Stumpy Point-Rodanthe emergency route beginning Sat., Nov. 3. This brings the total number of runs each day to 10 from each side.
Those wishing to use the emergency route are reminded to expect long waits and to be patient, as priority status is still in effect.

Directions to the Stumpy Point Emergency Ferry Dock at 100 Log Storage Road, off Highway 264: Take Highway 64 to Highway 264. Follow Highway 264 approximately 13 miles past the entrance to the village of Stumpy Point. Signs for emergency ferry service are posted to ferry entrance that will be on your left.
Directions to the Rodanthe Emergency Ferry Dock at 23170 Myrna Peters Road, Rodanthe: Turn west off Highway 12 onto Myrna Peters Road, which is located just north of the Community Building in Rodanthe.
Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry schedule
Beginning on Friday, Nov. 2, visitors can enter Hatteras Island via the Hatteras Inlet ferry.

For visitors wishing to come to Hatteras through Ocracoke, keep in mind that travel from Cedar Island to Ocracoke and Swan Quarter to Ocracoke requires a reservation by calling 1-800-293-3779.
More runs added to Swan Quarter ferry route
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division will add two departures from each side on its Swan Quarter-Ocracoke route this weekend. The extra departures are being offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Nov. 2, 3, 4) only.

Highway 12 on Hatteras Island
Highway 12 on Hatteras Island, north of Rodanthe, remains closed due to impacts from ocean overwash. Based upon NCDOT’s initial assessment, it is projected that Highway 12 from Oregon Inlet to Rodanthe will open by Thanksgiving. Currently, Highway 12 is clear between all the villages of Hatteras Island.
NPS facilities and beaches reopen
National Park Service efforts to re-open park facilities and beach access ramps to popular park beaches are moving forward. Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site are open and have resumed normal hours of operation. On Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches, all ocean and soundside beach areas have been evaluated for safe access for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Park beaches are open to pedestrian access throughout the park unless otherwise posted. Park visitors can expect to see some safety and/or resource protection closures in effect.

All Park Visitor Centers and ORV permit offices are open and have resumed normal hours of operation.
Billy Mitchell and Ocracoke airstrips are open.
The Know Your Park series presentation, previously scheduled for Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Ocracoke Community Center, has been cancelled.

Anglers Club tournament is on for next week
The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club annual Invitation Surf-fishing Tournament will go on as planned next week.
“We’re asking people to leave early, expect delays, carpool, and expect smaller stations on the beach,” said club president Larry Hardham.
Hardham said that 120 teams have registered, and he expects almost all of them to come.
The tournament begins with the captains’ meeting at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 10.

Belated trick or treat at Hatteras Realty
Hatteras Realty will sponsor a belated trick-or-treat Halloween party on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 3 until 5 p.m. at offices in Hatteras, Avon, and Waves. There will be ghoulish treats. Costumes are encouraged but not required.
Hatteras UMC Coastal Arts and Craft Day postponed
Because of Hurricane Sandy, the Hatteras Methodist Women’s Coastal Arts and Craft Day has been re-scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. – 2 pm. Also the location of this event has changed. It will be at the Hatteras Community Building, located between the post office and the library.
Really Really Free Market cancelled
The Really Really Free Market, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Avon Volunteer Fire Department has been cancelled for this month.
Storm debris pickup
Dare County has not made any decisions on storm debris pickup on Hatteras Island.
