Friday’s storm update: Emergency ferry, storm debris, highway work
Lines today and yesterday for the emergency ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe were long. However, reports last evening was that the Ferry Division was getting all vehicles from both sides moving.
The Ferry Division will add more ferries beginning tomorrow. Re-entry restrictions on visitors to Hatteras were lifted today.
If you plan to use the emergency ferry, arrive early and be prepared to wait.
The only priority given for emergency ferry service is for essential commodities and materials, as determined by Dare County Emergency Management and the Ferry Division. County Emergency Management has also said that priority will be given to Hatteras residents for medical emergencies and appointments for such treatments for chemotherapy, but not for doctor’s appointment.

Emergency ferry schedule
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Ferry Division is adding three runs to the Stumpy Point-Rodanthe emergency route beginning Sat., Nov. 3. This brings the total number of runs each day to 10 from each side.
Those wishing to use the emergency route are reminded to expect long waits and to be patient, as priority status is still in effect.

Directions to the Stumpy Point Emergency Ferry Dock at 100 Log Storage Road, off Highway 264: Take Highway 64 to Highway 264. Follow Highway 264 approximately 13 miles past the entrance to the village of Stumpy Point. Signs for emergency ferry service are posted to ferry entrance that will be on your left.
Directions to the Rodanthe Emergency Ferry Dock at 23170 Myrna Peters Road, Rodanthe: Turn west off Highway 12 onto Myrna Peters Road, which is located just north of the Community Building in Rodanthe.
Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry schedule
Beginning today, visitors were allowed to enter Hatteras Island via the Hatteras Inlet ferry. The ferry is still running every two hours.

For visitors wishing to come to Hatteras through Ocracoke, keep in mind that travel from Cedar Island to Ocracoke and Swan Quarter to Ocracoke requires a reservation by calling 1-800-293-3779.
Information on storm debris pickup
Storm debris pickup for the unincorporated areas of Dare County includes all of Hatteras Island, Manteo outside, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Martins Point, and Colington (including inside the gate):
Storm Debris should be placed on the side of the road for pick up. Debris should be placed in 4 separate piles:
1. Vegetative Debris (limbs, leaves, branches, sea grass, etc.)
2. Construction and Demolition Materials (building materials, concrete, shingles, etc.)
3. Metal
4. Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics (oil, bleach, toilet cleaner, televisions, computers, etc.)
Debris taken to the Dare County Transfer Station in Manns Harbor will be charged the usual tipping fee of $65/ton. The same applies for the Buxton Transfer Station.
The brush yard site located at 1018 Driftwood Drive in Manteo is closed for vegetative drop off until further notice. This site is open for recycling purposes only.

Coast Guard will have haunted house on Saturday
The men and women of U.S. Coast Guard Hatteras Inlet will have a haunted house on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 6 until 10 p.m. at the station near the ferry terminal in Hatteras village. Their message to the community is “Come if you dare!”
