Museum opens its doors for annual Holiday Open House

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras village opened its doors to residents and visitors for its second annual Holiday Open House on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8.
It was a festive afternoon in the village, as many folks took advantage of attending the parade and visiting the museum.
The museum was decorated with trees, swags, and wreaths, with a Williamsburg Della Robbia theme. Also, Charlie Klein, master model builder, designed a spectacular train set with a Winter Wonderland theme that mesmerized both young and old.
There was continuous live music from members of the community, including the Hatteras Charge United Methodist Church choir, local veterinarian Christinia Ballance on the flute, Patty Hill with holiday songs, and Joanne Pullen on the harp. The musical events concluded with a rousing holiday sing-a-long, led by museum volunteer, Dave Greider.
There were activities for children, exhibits in the Burrus Couch Midgett Gallery, and soups, ham biscuits, lots of cookies, and punch.
The Meekins Chandlery Gift Shop was open for Christmas shopping, and shoppers got an additional 5 percent off their purchases if they brought a donation for the island food pantry.
“Last year, after Hurricane Irene devastated the northern portion of the island, we thought the community needed a party,” said` Melanie Schwarzer of the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum group. “This year, we have had Sandy damage the island again. This is the museum’s celebration of the community. We want this event to be an annual pilgrimage for your families.”
