Gov. Beverly Perdue, the keynote speaker at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies 2010 Commencement, urged the 51 graduates to “become the next generation of great citizens of North Carolina.”
“This state and this country need you,” she told the Class of 2010 at the ceremony in the school gymnasium on Saturday evening, June 12.
She referred to the graduates as a “dynamite” class and told them to have fun Saturday night because “the work starts tomorrow.”
Perdue also gave a nod to the “important” people present – the parents, grandparents, and teachers.
The governor was introduced by graduate Avery Sterling Hooper, who had invited Perdue to speak at the ceremony when she was in Buxton for a meeting earlier in the school year.
The Presentation of Colors was by the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by senior Zachary James Gillikin, who will attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
Class president Rachael McDaniel welcomed more than 700 family members and friends of the graduates to the ceremony. Other class officers are: Bryce Timothy Morgan, vice-president; Yuliana Martinez Escobedo, secretary, and Michael Devin Gregory, treasurer.
Class valedictorian Michael Devin Gregory and salutatorian Lauren Ashley Randall addressed their classmates and the audience.
Principal Jean Taylor announced that the citizenship award was won by Ian Hollis Callahan.
Diplomas were awarded by Taylor, Superintendent of Dare County Schools Dr. Sue Burgess, and social studies teacher Braxton Hall.
Ray Gray, the retiring principal at Cape Hatteras Elementary School, addressed his former students, and Lexi Lee Bunting gave the closing remarks.
The colors of the 2010 graduating class are black and silver. The class song if “100 Years” by Five for Fighting, and the class motto is “Don’t tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon.”
