County updates re-entry information for Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo visitors

Dare County Emergency Management today advised visitors with upcoming travel plans to the Hatteras Island villages of Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo that visitor re-entry will not begin until a future date, sometime after Thursday, Oct. 6.

That announcement pushed the possible reopening of the tri-villages back by a week.

Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo are the Hatteras villages that suffered the most damage from Hurricane Irene’s tidal surge from the Pamlico Sound.

Dare County began allowing visitors to come to the southern Hatteras Island villages a week ago, on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Visitors to those villages – Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras – must enter via ferry from Swan Quarter or Cedar Island, through Ocracoke, and onto Hatteras on the Hatteras Inlet ferry.

The county has said that visitors entering southern Hatteras must have “mandatory” reservations on the Swan Quarter or Cedar Island ferry and that they cannot arrive by boat or plane.
Reservations are not necessary on the Hatteras Inlet ferry.

Also, visitors are not allowed on the emergency ferries from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe.

For the latest ferry schedule, see the Ferry Schedule button at the top right on the Hurricane Irene Aftermath Page.

Dare County advises that visitors with travel plans to Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo over the next couple of weeks should seek accommodations elsewhere in Dare County, north of Oregon Inlet. If you need help finding lodging, contact the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau at 1-877-629-4386 or visit www.outerbanks.org.
