Beginning Nov. 1, seasonal ORV routes will reopen in Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Some ORV routes may be temporarily closed due to a few remaining resource closures for sea turtle nests.
The seasonal ORV routes on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands reopen on Nov. 1 at 12:01 a.m. (or 7 a.m. if posted sea turtle nests remain on that particular route where, in a few locations, night driving restrictions are still in place.) A permit is required for any off-road vehicle use in Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The following ORV routes are reopening:
- 0.1 of a mile south of Rodanthe Pier to Ramp 23 (Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo village beaches)
- Ramp 34 to Ramp 38 (Avon beaches)
- East Frisco village beach boundary to 1.1 miles west
- East Hatteras village boundary to Ramp 55 (Hatteras Village beach)
- Ramp 68 near Ocracoke Campground beach (Ocracoke Island)
The few remaining resource closures for sea turtles nests that are still in effect for the seasonal ORV routes will reopen as soon as the nests hatch. On-site signage of a closed area in the park will be clearly marked in the field with “symbolic fencing” consisting of wooden or carsonite posts, closure signs, string, and black filter fencing.
