A coastal low pressure will develop off the North Carolina coast on Sunday, drift to the south, and then re-intensify before it moves north and northeast Monday into Monday night.
Late on Saturday afternoon, The National Weather Service in Newport, N.C., issued a wind advisory for the Outer Banks, a gale warning for coastal waters, a high surf advisory, and a coastal flood advisory .
The highest winds will be Sunday morning into Monday morning from the north at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50. The northerly winds will be turn to the northeast Sunday night into Monday at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45.
The coastal flood advisory is for the southern Pamlico Sound and the ocean north of Cape Hatteras, where seas will peak at 10 to 16 feet Sunday and Sunday night.
Ocean overwash and minor beach erosion are possible on northern Hatteras, where tides will run up to 4 feet above normal. The northerly winds on Sunday could cause minor soundside flooding, mostly on the southern Pamlico, with water level 2 to 3 feet above normal.
Winds and seas will peak late Sunday into Sunday night at 10 to 16 feet north of Ocracoke.
However, ocean overwash could extend into Tuesday morning on Hatteras Island with continued onshore flow and rough surf.
High tide on Sunday is around 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. and at about 9 on Monday morning.
Rain will also accompany the passage of the low with a 100 percent chance tonight, 30 percent Sunday, 50 percent Sunday night, and 60 percent on Monday.
