It may be just a day before New Year’s Eve, but the Outer Banks is experiencing a seasonal heatwave that is making the cusp of January feel more like June.
The National Weather Service Newport / Morehead City office reported that record high temperatures are possible for the eastern portion of the state today as some inland regions reach temperatures close to 80 degrees.
Along the Outer Banks, islanders will enjoy temperatures in the low 70s before temperatures drop down to the 50s on Tuesday. Scattered morning showers will become isolated in the afternoon as well, along with a small risk for strong thunderstorms.
The record high for Cape Hatteras for December 30 is 74 degrees, which was set in 2015.
