A number of Ocracoke businesses are alive and well and online during the COVID-19 lock down while others continue to make Hurricane Dorian repairs and will open soon.

The OCBA has compiled a list of island businesses that conduct online sales.

Ocracoke Island friend Carter Whitman of Andover, New Hampshire, contacted the Observer with a way for island businesses to make sales to “non-resident perennial renters, or NRPRs,” as he calls himself, and the Observer passed it on to the OCBA.

Whitman got hooked on Ocracoke in 2011 and takes extended vacations here every year, usually in the spring.

“Every day since the island was shut down from Dorian, I have monitored all of my news sources nearly every day for information about Ocracoke,” he wrote in an email.  “The coverage available only showed a small fraction of the terrible devastation that occurred on my favorite island. I did what I could from afar to send aid. I felt the strong desire to be on Ocracoke.
“Then the virus hit.”

The shutdown has delivered a second economic blow to Ocracoke still reeling and recovering from the Dorian devastation of Sept. 6.

“Now our job is to stay home and knock this virus back on its heels,” Whitman said.

The following is a list of island businesses who will sell gift certificates or merchandise. Businesses who want to be added to the list should send an email to info@ocracokeobserver.com.
