Traffic Shift Begins on Wright Memorial Bridge Oct. 2

Today, October 2, workers with the N.C. Department of Transportation and Flatiron Construction will begin the process of closing the eastbound Wright Memorial Bridge at the Currituck/Dare County line. All traffic will eventually be shifted onto the westbound bridge in a two-lane, two-way pattern.

The shift will begin for eastbound traffic near the intersection of U.S. 158 and Pine Grove Lane and end on the other side of the bridge near the intersection of U.S. 158 and Dogwood Trail. During the closure, spee

d limits in the work zone will be reduced to 45 miles per hour.

The closure will allow crews to perform repair and refurbishment work on the surface of the eastbound bridge. Traffic is scheduled to be restored to both sides of the bridge by May 14, 2018.

The work is part of an overall $21 million project to refurbish the Wright Memorial Bridge. The project is funded by an initiative designed to improve the conditions and increase the lifespans of high-value bridges across the state.

Motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect delays.
