Island Fishing: Late July and “Shark Week” fishing is still hot

As we near the end of July, there seems to be a general feeling on the island that summer is on its way out already, but the season is far from over. In terms of fishing, there is something to be had for the novice, the seasoned angler, and everyone in between. Despite some extreme air and water temperatures, we’re still seeing some very nice catches this season.

Throughout these hot days, the bluefish bite is dominating inshore and in the surf. Spanish mackerel aren’t quite as plentiful unless people get lucky enough to find a big school, but we have seen regular reports of fairly large Spanish when they are caught, which makes for a fun fight.

Speckled trout are biting in the surf and sound, filling up coolers as well. Those fishing off the beaches in Buxton have had good luck with spot, croaker, pompano, and sea mullet. The drum bite, although expectedly slower for summer, has still been pretty consistent, with anglers bringing in nice puppy drum, and releasing over-slot bull reds. Reports of cobia have dwindled down, but there is the occasional catch nearshore.

The well-loved “Shark Week” has been a common topic of conversation over the last few days and anglers are getting their fill of in-person experiences as well. There have been several reports of shark catches in the surf near Buxton and Frisco, with many people posting their fights and releases on social media.

Offshore catches have teeter-tottered lately, with several good days often followed by a couple of very slow ones, but as anyone who’s ever called themselves a fisherman knows, that’s fishing.

The mahi mahi showing up on the docks lately are mostly bailers, and while they’re certainly around, the catches seem to be less abundant than in the previous couple of years. Many have talked about the hot water temps being partly to blame. Still, most days the offshore boats are bringing in plenty for everyone on board to get their share of nice filets. Blackfin tuna catches have been good considering the season, and there are even a few yellowfin landing on the docks occasionally. The wahoo bite has picked back up over the last few days making for some very happy anglers.

Although we don’t expect August to bring any respite from the heat, fingers crossed, fishing will at least stay consistent throughout the next month or so until we move into cooler fall weather!
