Frisco Native American Museum will host Meet the Author Dr. Michael Leroy Oberg

Dr. Michael ObergMeet Dr. Michael Oberg, author of The Head in Edward Nugent’s Hand, Roanoke’s Forgotten Indians, on Wednesday, May 29th, from 4 pm until 6 pm, at the Frisco Native American Museum’s newly redesigned Natural History Center. Oberg is a historical scholar on Chief Wingina, a distinguished Professor of History at SUNY/Geneseo, and the founder of the Geneseo Center for Local and Municipal History, which he directed from 2019 until 2022.

Dr. Oberg has worked as a historical consultant for native communities in New York and North Carolina, as well as for the Indian Resources Section of the United States Department of Justice. Joining him will be Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, a researcher and historian for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. A member of the Piscataway Indian Nation, she also works with Piscataway Indian Nation’s Repatriation Project as the Research Director. Dr. Tayac also assumed the post of Recognition Coordinator, advocating successfully for her people.

This is a kickoff for The Secotan Alliance’s first annual event: In the Spirit of Wingina…and Beyond. Two additional days of conferences and roundtable discussions will take place May 30-31, 2024, at the Dare Campus of the College of the Albemarle, located on Roanoke Island on 205 U.S. 64 in Manteo, NC. Look for the Veterans Room in the main building.
