Everything you need to know about the Outer Banks Scenic Byway…WITH AUDIO

Share post:

By now, islanders and visitors have noticed the attractive new signs along Highway 12 on Hatteras Island that designate the road as the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway and direct visitors to area landmarks and points of interest.

The scenic byway was the topic of conversation on the latest edition of “To the Point,” the Radio Hatteras interview show hosted by Island Free Press editor Irene Nolan.

Nolan had two guests for the interview who answered all of the questions folks have about the scenic byway and what it means for the communities through which it passes.

Mary Helen Goodloe-Murphy of Rodanthe has been a leader in the effort to establish the byway as the chairman of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway committee for more than a decade.

Doug Stover, the cultural resources manager and historian for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore until his retirement several years ago, is the author of a new book, ‘The Outer Banks Scenic Byway,” which is chock full of vintage photos and information about the culture and history of the area and its one and only highway.

“To the Point” is broadcast on the island’s community radio station,101.5 FM on southern Hatteras and 99.9 FM on northern Hatteras, at 5 p.m. on the first and third Sunday of each month. It is repeated on the second and fourth Sunday. Those who don’t live on Hatteras can listen to the show on Sundays through live streaming at www.radiohatteras.org.
