Celebrate Spring with a sailing ‘Race-cation’ on the Outer Banks May 13-15
The Wind & Waves spring regatta on Hatteras Island is all about fun for your whole family
After a long, cold winter, make this sailing getaway on the Outer Banks your family’s newest spring tradition. The annual Wind & Waves regatta celebrates the change of seasons with sailing, surfing, beaches, and bonfires. This weekend of fun will have you breathing in the salty ocean air and moving with the world-renown winds on Cape Hatteras. A steady South to Southwest wind that averages around 20 knots hardly ever disappoints a good group of sailors and surfers :). Even if you don’t round the marks yourself, Hatteras Island locals are hosting springtime activities and fun for the whole family.

Give back. All proceeds benefit the Hatteras Island’s community sailing program whose mission is mentoring local youth into lifelong seamanship and fostering healthy respect & love for nature.
Frequently asked questions
Where will we stay?
Event sponsor Frisco Woods Campground is hosting the event’s lodging and has a variety of options on hold for regatta attendees. The facilities are amazing with pool, showers, cabins, event pavilion, full-service RV sites, tent sites, car camping – you name it – Frisco Woods has all that and more. It is important to book your stay as soon as possible because space is limited.
How much will I save by registering early?
There is a 30% discount on every item if you register before Mar 30th at midnight. That is a pretty huge discount and adds up with each of the meals, t-shirts, activities. So please help us plan a fantastic event by registering early.
Are we invited even if we don’t race?
Yes, of course. Please join us for all the fun and cheer on your favorite crew. It is a joint activity with Frisco’s Spring Fest and is open to all!
Which one design classes are open?
We currently have Opti Green, Club 420, and Flying Scot classes open. Additional classes can be opened with a minimum of 5 boats per class. We can only host 8 total classes, so if you’d like to see your class opened, please get the request in early.
Is this a juniors regatta?
Yes, and no. The regatta is open to junior and adult sailing classes. We know that there will be a lot of Opti Green and 420 Sailors. Others are invited if they register at least 5 boats per fleet.
Is there enough depth for my boat?
We set the race course in the deepest waters that we can. Generally, the depths average at least 4 – 7 feet on the race course. Boats need to have removable or retractable boards so they can get back to the Campground which is about 10 – 20 inches deep. Some classes can moor out in deeper water if need be.
Are the registration fees per person or per boat?
The registration fees are per person even on boats with multiple member crews. The detailed registration form gives us the information we need to pair up the sailors within each boat’s crew. You will receive a magic link to registration after your order is completed.
Where can I find the sailing instructions?
The sailing instructions are pretty standard, and the details can be found on our regatta information page here: https://hatterassailing.org/wind-waves-one-design-regatta/#NOR
