Hatteras Island Meals’ Annual Raffle returns for 2022 with some of its biggest prize packages yet
Hatteras Island Meals’ annual raffle is in full swing, and 2022 is already proving to be a banner year for the event, with a total of seven prize packages worth more than $1,000 each.
“Last year, we had 30 businesses donate [to the raffle] and had six packages,” said VP for Hatteras Island Meals Liz (Betty) Pritchard. “This year, 67 businesses have donated to the packages, so we added an [extra] prize package for 2022.”
Hatteras Island Meals (HIM) provides nutritious meals to elderly or homebound clients on Hatteras Island, and the all-volunteer organization, (which began in 1987 as local folks preparing meals in their own homes for homebound residents), uses the annual raffle as their primary source of fundraising.
Currently, HIM serves 45 residents throughout the island, with meals provided by Diamond Shoals in Buxton, Sonny’s in Hatteras village, and Island Convenience and Waves Market & Deli in the Tri-villages.
Though the fundraising raffle was canceled in 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it returned in 2021 with local residents winning five out of the six prize packages.
This year, the organization is already breaking records, with 101 tickets sold at the annual Day at the Docks Festival alone. HIM has a total of 5,000 tickets available, and roughly 2,800 tickets have been sold since the raffle began in mid-August.
Tickets are 1 for $10, or 4 for $35, and are available at a number of local businesses along the island. HIM volunteers also set up temporary sales sites at popular locales, and this week, tickets will be available at Connor’s Supermarket on Wednesday, September 21, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and on Saturday, September 24, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
“A big shout all to all of our volunteers who sit and sell these tickets, and also to the businesses who have donated prizes, [and who allow us] to sit in front of their business and sell tickets,” said Pritchard. “We really have some amazing people here.”
The temporary sales sites vary from week to week, and folks can check out the HIM Facebook page to see when and where tickets will be for sale in the not-so-distant future.
Raffle tickets are also available anytime at NC 12 Realty at the Osprey Shopping Center in Buxton, at Diamond Shoals Restaurant, and at Frank & Fran’s in Avon. In addition, off-island folks who want to purchase tickets can also request them online at http://hatterasislandmeals.org/.
Tickets will be available up until the drawing, which is scheduled for October 22, 2022. With prize packages that are bigger and better than ever, islanders are encouraged to pick up their tickets as soon as possible so they don’t miss a chance at scoring a wealth of local goodies.
