U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet delivers supplies to Ocracoke Island
The U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet recently helped out their Ocracoke neighbors during an extensive road closure and interruption in the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service by delivering supplies directly to the island.
“Living in the Outer Banks can be challenging enough to start, but even harder when the weather takes a turn,” stated the U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet in an online update. “There have been multiple breaches along Ocracoke’s sand dunes along N.C. 12 that have shut the road down, causing the ferries to be inaccessible.
“[On Tuesday,] the crew got the opportunity to assist the community of Ocracoke Island in a small way by delivering supplies to the local health care providers.”
Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry service has been suspended since Saturday, (and N.C. Highway 12 on northern Ocracoke Island has been closed), due to continuous rounds of ocean overwash and flooding from the recent low pressure system.
Per a Tuesday update from the N.C. Ferry System, the highway and Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry operations are expected to be closed for several more days as a second low pressure system impacts the Outer Banks. The Ocracoke-Swan Quarter and Ocracoke-Cedar ferries are running as scheduled, but reservations are strongly recommended.
