Upcoming fundraising events on Ocracoke Island
Fish-fry fundraisers help those in need
Ocracoke Islanders love to do fish-fry fund raisers for those in need.
The locals rally and use the cook shack behind the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department to cook and prepare fresh fried fish, hush puppies, coleslaw and sometimes potato salad. Also for sale at these events could be baked goods or a 50-50 raffle.
Locals will organize another fish-fry fundraiser starting at 3 p.m. Nov. 16 for islander Kim O’Neal who lost her husband, Reggie, in October. When she’s not working at the NC ferry office on Ocracoke, she collects trash and does yard maintenance.
So, along with the fish fry, also to benefit O’Neal there will be a 50-50 raffle and a raffle for a John Deere riding mower.
Tickets for the meal will be $20 each.
For those that cannot make it and want to provide support, you can write a check payable to Kim O’Neal and mail it to Island Ragpicker, P.O. Box 1713, Ocracoke, NC 27960
The locals rallied with a fish fry on Oct. 12 to buy a golf cart for islander John Simpson, who was without wheels since Hurricane Dorian on Sept. 6, 2019, took his away.
“I am humbled,” Simpson said about the effort.
