KITTYHAWK — Mark Dane Dough, 57, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Oct.26 while camping with his wife, Cyd, in Buxton where they enjoyed manyweekends fishing on the beach. Mark and Cyd had just celebrated their30th wedding anniversary.
Theyoungest son of McDonald and Myrtle Meekins Dough, both deceased, Markwas raised in Colington and helped at the store owned by his parents,the Stop and Shop in Kill Devil Hills.
He grew up surfing and fishing and had a great love of the outdoors and the Outer Banks.
AlthoughMark earned a degree in Environmental Health at East CarolinaUniversity, he enjoyed cooking and worked in numerous localrestaurants, eventually in 1991 becoming manager and then part owner ofFrisco’s Restaurant in Kitty Hawk. After selling the restaurant in2000, Mark started a landscape business which he operated until thepresent.
Hewas the grandson of the late William Lewis and Ida Haywood Meekins andthe late Samuel Clifford Basnight Sr. and Zorada TillettBasnight. His great-grandfather was William S. Dough, one ofthe five witnesses of the first controlled powered flight of the WrightBrothers.
Inaddition to his wife Cyd, he is survived by the families of hisbrothers, William Michael “Mike” Dough and his wife Jane, nephewMichael Craig Dough of Gloucester, and niece Kimberly A. Burns ofVirginia Beach, sister-in-law Linda Mann Dough of Kill Devil Hills, andnephews, Allen Dough of Poplar Branch and Keith Dough ofColington. Mark was predeceased by his
brother Rodney Kent Dough.
ACelebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. atTwiford’s Funeral Home located at 500 Budleigh Street in Manteo. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Dare County ASPCA.
