Earl Wesley O’Neal

April 2, 1937 – April 15, 2025

AVON — Earl Wesley O’Neal (USCG PO1 retired) of Avon, NC, peacefully crossed the bar to be with his Lord, surrounded by his wife and family on April 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Earl was born on April 2, 1937, to his parents, Talmage Ray O’Neal and Carrie Winston Gray O’Neal, both of Avon, NC.

Earl was first and foremost a Kinnakeeter. Born with salt in his blood like all true Hatteras Island men. He grew up on the water and running the beaches of the island he loved so dearly. Like his father, when he turned 18 he joined the US Coast Guard. He became an Aviation Survivalman 1st Class. Earl spent 20 years in the Coast Guard and retired in 1975 before returning home to Avon, NC. He spent many years with children and grandchildren surrounding him, begging for another story of his days in the Coast Guard.

Earl gave his heart to the Lord in 1983. He faithfully served God all the remaining years of his life and became a man of God for many young men to look to. He married the love of his life, Patricia W. Misch O’Neal, on August 13, 1983, and then also became a wonderful and loving dad to her then 4 year old son, Ryan Misch, who had lost his dad at the age of 2 just like Earl.

Earl lived out his days in Kinnakeet. He was a hardworking man who always did what he could to help others. He lovingly cared for his mother until her death at nearly 102 years of age. He taught his son to be out on the waters of the sound, to fish nets, and crabbing pots. His grandchildren cherish memories of walking with him to the harbor and down the soundside. Earl was known by all for his storytelling and sense of humor. Any time spent with him was filled with laughter. In the twilight years of his life, he spent many days sitting at the Avon Harbor with the other elders of the village talking about days gone by.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Talmage Ray O’Neal, Sr and Carrie Winston Gray O’Neal. His brother, Talmage “Ray” O’Neal Jr. His son, Stacey O’Neal, and daughter Vivian Braun.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia W. O’Neal of Avon, NC. His son, D. Ryan Misch, and wife, Sarah, of Buxton, NC. His Stepson, Dan Haight, and Wife, Maureen, of Alberta, Canada. Stepson Daren Haight and wife Lisa of Ontario, Canada. As well as 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Gray Family Cemetery in Buxton, North Carolina.

Our family is grateful for everyone’s thoughts, prayers, and comfort during this time.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’”

Psalms 91:1-2
