BUXTON — Elisabeth “Betty” Stoffel was born in Kiental, Switzerland, and to her last breath, memories of life in the Swiss Alps brought a smile to her face. She shared her fond memories of growing up in the Alps with everyone she met. Betty came to America at 18 as an Au pair in New York City. She spoke no English at the time, learning the language from the children she cared for. That spirit of never giving up stayed with her throughout her long life. She returned to Zurich, where her family lived, and there she met her love, Tony Stoffel. Along with their young son, Rene, they returned to the United States and eventually found their way to North Carolina and Hatteras Island, where Betty lived until her death. Living on Hatteras, she loved fishing with her husband and the many friends they made. As she grew older, she turned to Facebook, where she made friends throughout the world.
That same independent attitude she had as a child did not fade; she spoke three languages fluently, learning Croatian when she was in her eighties. Throughout her life, she was an animal lover. Her beloved beagles were part of her family and gave her great joy. Betty was able to live independently until a few months before passing, spending her time listening to Swiss music and staying in touch with family and friends through Facebook.
Betty always said, “age is just a number,” and she lived life that way. Always accepting what life gave her and making the best of every situation. We know she is once again running through the lush alpine meadows with the beauty of the snow-capped Alps all around.
Betty is survived by her son, Rene Stoffel (Pam), and nephew, Martin vonEuw.
