George Ray “Bird” Stallings, 66, of Rocky Mount, NC, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, at his second home in Buxton, NC. Born on November 16, 1958, in Rocky Mount, NC, George lived a life full of passion, dedication, and love.
Ray earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina, which laid the foundation for his successful career. He owned and operated Stallings Tile Company, where his hard work and entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly. Later, he shared his love for the beautiful Outer Banks as a tour guide, enriching the experiences of countless visitors with his knowledge and enthusiasm.
A lifelong devotee of baseball, Ray directed tournaments and coached youth teams, leaving a lasting impact on young athletes who admired his patience and leadership. He also enjoyed studying history and spent many peaceful hours collecting shells along the coastline he adored.
Ray was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Lottie Ray Rackley Stallings and James Edward Stallings, and two brothers, Robbie and Randy Stallings.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Lynn Schmidt Stallings; his cherished daughter, Chelsea Cornett (Bryson) of Dobson, NC; sons, Parker Stallings (Kaitlyn) of Whitakers, NC, and Grant Stallings (Elizabeth) of Wilson, NC. He was the proud grandfather, “Papa Bird,” of Henry Cornett, Hazel Cornett, and Thomas Stallings, with an additional grandson expected in February 2025. His memory will also be carried on by his brother, Mike Stallings (Dianne) of Rocky Mount, NC, and his sister-in-law, Susan Stallings of Sanford, NC, along with many friends and extended family members.
Services to honor Ray’s life will be held at a later date. In this time of mourning, the family finds comfort in the love and support of those who knew him. George Ray Stallings will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose generosity and kindness touched many hearts.
