Godfrey (Jinx) Caylor

AVON — Godfrey (Jinx) Caylor, age 97, of Avon, NC, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. She was born in Sparrows Point, Md., to the late James and Lillian Brown.

Godfrey was known as Jinx to her family and friends, a nickname that reflected her fun and outgoing personality. She grew up in south New Jersey and graduated from Woodbury High School. She continued her education at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1946 with a degree in journalism at the tender age of 20. Jinx worked in the Washington, DC area until retiring and moving to her beloved Outer Banks Village of Avon. There, she served as a tour guide at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for many years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering at The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, the local thrift shop, and the Board of Elections. Jinx lived in Avon for over 30 years and loved the island and its local people.

Jinx is survived by her devoted son Bruce, her brother Creighton Brown, her nephew, and several nieces. She was predeceased by her sister, Shirley Ellen Clayton, and her sister-in-law, Mary Brown.

There will be a celebration of Jinx’s life on August 12 at the Avon Fire Station at 2:00 pm.
