KILL DEVIL HILLS — Julia “Judy” Penny Cashwell, of Kill Devil Hills, NC passed away peacefully on October 15, 2022. She had celebrated her 90th Birthday in January and was in good health until receiving a stage 4 cancer diagnosis in September.
Julia was born in Raleigh, NC in 1932 to Edward Penny and Julia Stone Penny. She was predeceased by younger siblings (a sister and two brothers) as well as two infant siblings. She moved to Richmond, VA in 1960 upon marrying her beloved husband of 60 years, Ernest Cashwell, of Fayetteville, NC. She raised her two sons in Richmond, sang in the choir at Bethany Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), volunteered in the library and office at St. Michael’s and Trinity Episcopal Schools, and was a prolific fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
After Ernest retired as Chief Electrical Engineer at Phillip Morris, they moved in 1991 to Topping, VA near the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay, where they had many happy times fishing and boating and doting on their granddaughter. When her husband succumbed to kidney failure in 2020, Julia moved to Spring Arbor of the Outer Banks, where she greatly enjoyed the beach, bingo, scallops, and spending time with her many friends among the wonderful staff and residents.
She is survived by son, Robert Cashwell of Kill Devil Hills, NC; son, Michael Cashwell of Arlington, VA; granddaughter, Nicole Cashwell of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces and nephews and their spouses and partners.
Julia treasured her family and was devoted to her friends, all of whom will miss her deeply. Consistent with her wishes, she wanted no funeral service and no “fuss.” Donations in her memory may be made to Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 98 Deltaville, VA 23043 or your favorite charity.
