March 16, 1952 – December 22, 2023
MANTEO — Susan Taylor Meekins Simpson, 71, of Manteo, died December 22, 2023 with her loved ones by her side. Born March 16, 1952 in Currituck County, she was the daughter of the late Francis W. Meekins Sr. and Virginia H. Meekins of Manteo.
Susan grew up in Sunnyside on the North End of Roanoke Island, where she lived most of her life. After graduating from Manteo High School in 1970, she studied marine biology at North Carolina State University. She enjoyed a long career in the family newspaper business, serving in many meaningful roles of guidance and leadership throughout her decades of service to The Coastland Times.
She found joy in being on the water, beachcombing, gardening, knitting, crocheting, reading and, most of all, making memories with her children and grandchildren. An incredibly loving, patient, dedicated mother and grandmother, Susan leaves a legacy of warm-hearted compassion, authenticity and appreciation for the simplicity of life. She is loved by many and will be deeply missed.
With strength beyond measure, she battled four bouts of cancer over the span of 17 years. Tenacity, determination, perseverance and a good sense of humor were core strengths which embodied the thread of her existence. She and her family were grateful for the kindness extended by her close friends and loved ones.
In addition to her mother, Susan is survived by her three daughters, Theresa Jane Schneider, Jennifer Marie Simpson and Kimberly Anne Simpson, all of Manteo; her grandchildren — whom she loved and cherished infinitely — Adrian Isaiah Simpson, Briana Catherine Lee and Cora Michelle Lee, all of Manteo. She is also survived by her son-in-law, Brian Schneider of Manteo; brother, F. Warren Meekins Jr. and wife Beverly of Manteo; sister, Holly M. Williams and husband Harry of Inez; aunt and dear friend, Mary Blanche Harwell and husband Boyce of Manteo; along with many extended family members and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo on Saturday, December 30 at 1 pm. Please come as you are, if you will, to share memories and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill or Adoration Home Health & Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
