The ORV-Only Corridor that allowed vehicles to access Cape Point, (but not pedestrians), was removed on Thursday, June 29. As a result, both vehicles and pedestrians may now drive or walk to the Point.
The corridor was removed 14 days after the last oyster catching nesting activity was identified, per the new buffer rules.
It was originally established on March 28, due to American oystercatcher nesting activity.
The National Park Service continues to urge Point visitors to use caution when accessing the new island that has formed off the Point, and does not recommend that visitors swim or wade to these areas. “If you want to visit the island, the best way is to use a kayak or paddleboard,” said Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent Dave Hallac.
