New beach access parking area being built north of Buxton
A new 16-car parking area is in the process of being constructed along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) just north of Buxton, close to a stretch of oceanside shoreline that is popular with surfers and beachgoers.
The clay and shell-based parking area, (which is adjacent to soundside ORV Ramp #60), is being constructed by DOT Construction, Inc., which tackled a similar project on Bodie Island in early 2023.
“We expect the parking area to be opened to the public in late February or early March,” stated Michael Barber, Public Affairs Specialist for CHNS. “Once opened, the parking area will provide a safer experience for Cape Hatteras National Seashore recreational visitors and vehicular traffic along a busy stretch of N.C. Highway 12.”
For a complete list of parking areas and ORV ramps, including current beach conditions, see the CHNS website at https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/conditions.htm.
Another setup for pedestrians to be struck by cars. Happened two months ago at a pedestrian crosswalk in a blind spot with a curve and an incline, in a 55mph zone!
Injuries were so grievous that Dare Med-flight had to land on-scene in highway.
No mention of that in local papers, ignored, might be bad for tourism.
Buddy…just like the missing person and no foul play expected incident in Rodanthe. Lots of rug sweeping going on.
