Major Accident on N.C. Highway 12 in Avon

Traffic on N.C. Highway 12 was stopped on both sides of Ace Hardware and the Food Lion shopping plaza in Avon from approximately 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., when traffic slowly resumed in both directions.

It was reported that the accident involved a Dare County sanitation truck and a white van. The Dare County Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments, and Dare County EMTs are currently on scene and responding to the accident. It was also reported that the Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched to the site of the accident.

There is no word yet on the identities of the drivers and / or passengers, or their condition.

Travelers should be prepared for stopped traffic and potentially long delays in south Avon through Friday afternoon, and adjust plans as needed.

Two people were critically injured.
