During the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s closure of Highway 12 for a weekend in Frisco, Dare County Emergency Management has arranged for shuttle service from the north and south sides of the construction site.
The highway will close at milepost 65 in Frisco at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, for a necessary culvert pipe replacement. The road will reopen no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, March 3.
The culvert pipe being replaced is located south of Timber Trail in Frisco. The pipe stretches underneath both lanes of Highway 12. To perform the replacement, NCDOT must remove the existing pipe, lay new pipe and reconstruct the road surface. The culvert replacement was coordinated to occur during the slower visitation season and prior to a resurfacing project for NC 12 scheduled for the spring.
During the replacement project, Cape Hatteras National Seashore will offer a temporary route for off-road vehicles (ORVs) as a detour.
For those without access to a four-wheel drive vehicle, Dare County Emergency Management has arranged for shuttle service from the north and south sides of the construction site.
On Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Dare County Transportation and Dare County Schools will provide service from the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies in Buxton (on the north end) and from the Frisco Bath House Parking Area (on the south side).
Departure times for shuttles from each parking area will be 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2.
On Saturday, the vans will also provide service at Oden’s Dock in Hatteras for the planned oyster roast, Shellabration.
The shuttle will pick passengers up from each location and drop them near the construction site where the Department of Transportation will provide a temporary walkover for access to the other side. Vans will be available to take passengers to the other parking area.
Again, the shuttle service is only available at the parking areas listed above and no other sites. There is no parking near the construction area, so anyone who plans to utilize the temporary walkway must use the shuttle service.
