Burrus Field is dedicated in Buxton with much hoopla …WITH SLIDE SHOW

Share post:

A large crowd turned out on Saturday, April 17, to dedicate the Dare County Parks and Recreation Department’s ball field in Buxton to a Hatteras islander who played baseball in the major leagues.

Dare County and Hatteras Island Babe Ruth Baseball hosted the dedication, which coincided with the opening day ceremonies for the Babe Ruth teams.

The ball field is now officially Burrus Field, named for Maruice Lennon “Dick” Burrus, who was born in Hatteras village in 1898. He and his parents, Captain Ethelbert Dozier Burrus and Achsah

Williams Burrus, lived in a home on the Slash behind Hatteras Methodist Church.

Burrus played professional baseball for six years between the years of 1919 and 1929 for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Braves.

After his time in baseball, Burrus returned to Hatteras Island, became a successful businessman and served as a county commissioner from 1948 to 1950. Burrus died in 1972.

His descendants and family members are still active in the community and attended the ceremony, which was led by Allen Burrus, vice-chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners, and Hatteras Island Babe Ruth Baseball organizers, including Rusty Wilkinson, Kathy Tawes, Jaki Gray, and Johnny Conner.

A community cookout and pitch, hit, and run contest followed the ceremony.
