Hatteras islanders can comment during board meetings via remote video link

Beginning May 2, a remote video link at the Fessenden Center in Buxton will enable Hatteras Island citizens to address Dare County Commissioners during public comment periods and public hearings, and also view County Commissioner meetings live without traveling to Manteo.

Prior to each regularly scheduled meeting, the activity room at the Fessenden Center will be set up with chairs and a large monitor at the front of the room. Fessenden Center staff will greet attendees and invite them to sign in to speak.

Public comments from Buxton will be part of the official minutes and recorded as part of the video that is available for viewing a few days later on the Government Channel and online at darenc.com.

“We are happy to provide this service for our Hatteras Island citizens who have previously had to travel up to an hour and a half each way to reach Manteo for a meeting,” said Bob Woodard, Chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners. “This Board is committed to finding ways to encourage and keep all Dare County citizens involved in their local government.”

Earlier this year, the Dare County Commissioners held a town hall meeting in Buxton with over 200 people attending to express opinions and concerns about issues ranging from beach nourishment and inlet maintenance to health concerns.

In addition, the Dare County Board of Commissioners will hold their May 16 meeting at the Fessenden Center to provide easy access for citizens wishing to speak about the proposed, recently expanded service district for the Buxton Beach Nourishment Project.

The May 16 meeting begins at 5 p.m. with the public hearing for the service district scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
