New Hatteras and Ocracoke NCDOT traffic cameras now live

Share post:

Getting a birds-eye view of the Outer Banks just got easier, thanks to four new traffic cameras activated by the N.C. Department of Transportation on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.

As part of an effort to better monitor conditions along N.C. 12 on southern Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island, NCDOT installed one traffic camera at the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Terminal on Hatteras Island, one camera at the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Terminal on Ocracoke Island, and two cameras on N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island between the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry Terminal and the village.

These cameras will enable NCDOT to monitor roadway conditions during inclement weather and travel conditions during peak travel seasons. It will also help motorists see traffic at the ferry terminals.

The solar-powered cameras cost about $15,000 each and communicate by a cellular connection. The new cameras can be viewed online here by scrolling the map south to the Ocracoke Island area and placing your cursor over the camera icons.
