Fire Destroys Building in Hatteras Village on Wednesday ….WITH SLIDE SHOW
By Anne C. Burroughs
Early morning winds fanned the flames which destroyed Building E at the Slash Creek Condominiums located in Hatteras Village.
Fire alarms and sirens filled the darkness at around 3:00 a.m. this morning as local volunteer fire fighters from four villages raced to extinguish the huge blaze that filled the night sky.
“It spread enormously fast,” says eye witness Alan Yeingst who lives in the neighboring building.
Five of the nine condos in Building E were occupied at the time of the blaze. According to neighbors, two people from Unit 5 jumped to safety from the second floor and were taken for medical attention for leg and ankle injuries but released later that same morning.
Alan Yeingst
and his wife were first alerted to the potential problem when they heard the siren from the Hatteras Fire House through an open window.
“I didn’t think much of it at first because false alarms were common in the past because of the elevator room which had been fixed,” remembers Yeingst. “Then my wife said she saw embers from building E and I called the manager.”
Dare County Sheriff’s Department state that they are waiting for the State Bureau of Investigations to inspect the charred remains to determine the cause of the blaze.
Building D was evacuated during the fire fight because of its proximity to building E. According to several residents, it was a chaotic scene.
At noon today, the Hatteras Fire Department was called back to the scene to spray foam on a hot spot located on the fascia on the back side of the building.
It is expected that the building will be a total loss.
