Storm-Damaged Stacking Lanes on Northern Ocracoke Island Reopen after Repairs

Share post:

Repairs to the stacking lanes on the Ocracoke side of the Hatteras / Ocracoke ferry are now complete and are in use, per a Friday afternoon announcement from the NCDOT Ferry System.

The repairs were needed after a series of winter storms and March nor’easters, which damaged the lanes at the northern end of Ocracoke Island that are used by vehicles waiting to board the ferry to Hatteras. Two of the five lanes washed away during the extreme winter weather this year.

The restoration project included placing sandbags to protect the lanes, building a sand dune to protect the vehicle waiting area, and resurfacing the lanes.

The $533,000 project was conducted by Sawyer’s Land Developing of Belhaven, NC. Work and was completed before its expected July 27 deadline.
